According to Bonifacio, most of the dengue cases recorded in Quezon City were children aged 1 to 10 years old.

Meanwhile, Dr. Nestor Dumacas, who represented the Quezon City Schools Division medical unit at the forum, stated that 68 dengue cases in the city were recorded in schools from June, the start of classes, to August.

He added that three of the cases contributed to the 23 recorded fatalities in the city.

“This June, maybe there were only a few [cases]. But when the rainy season started, they picked up. In July, it increased,” Dumacas said.

“So, we suggest that there is a mid-year outbreak pattern possibly due to rainy season conditions, so there is an increase in the mosquito breeding so the cases of dengue have increased,” he added.

‘Cases low compared to February dengue outbreak’

Despite the increase of cases this year compared to last year, Bonifacio noted that the dengue cases were low compared to the outbreak in February, in which the city recorded 1,769 cases solely from January 1 to February 14, with 10 fatalities.

“We are seeing the numbers decreasing, compared to when we declared an outbreak here in QC last February. We are seeing fewer numbers or a lower threat of cases,” Bonifacio said.

“But we still can’t be complacent because the bad weather and rains are coming again. So, we expect that because there will be stagnant water due to the rains, it is possible that there will be breeding sites for mosquitoes that carry dengue,” she added.

Bonifacio told residents of Quezon City that their health centers are open from Mondays to Fridays, with free medical consultations and medications available.

“Rapid dengue testing is available in all health centers in Quezon City. This means that if we see a patient with a fever lasting two days or more and two other symptoms compatible with dengue, dengue testing is available and accessible,” she said.

“Once we see that they are positive, we have what we call disease surveillance officers in every health center who are monitoring our cases,” Bonifacio added. /das
