After Donald Trump was re-elected last year, some tourists have looked away from the USA.

Some tourists have decided not to visit the US with Donald Trump back as President and instead have looked towards other destinations. The United States is one of the top three most visited countries in the world, but it could see less visitors now.

Instead, tourists are looking towards other holiday hotspots to avoid the US, but what are the main reasons why tourists no longer want to visit the America? Across the US, there are many popular places which draw in millions of tourists, such as San Francisco, New York and Chicago. This combined with its role as a global business powerhouse meant it had 66.5 million visitors in 2023 – and the 2024 figure is expected to be higher still.

But a lot has changed in recent months, and 2025’s figures may not be as strong, reports The Independent.

Donald Trump was re-elected as President in 2024 and this now poses changes to foreign diplomacy and relations, alongside internal cultural shifts and shifting attitudes towards the US from around the world.

Research by Tourism Economics shows that travel to the US is now estimated to decline to 5.5% this year.

It was initially estimated that it would grow to 9%, but this looks unlikely now. It is estimated that further escalation in tariff and trade wars could result in further reductions in international tourism, which could mean £13.8 billion annual reduction in tourist spending in 2025.

Research by YouGov in March found that western European attitudes towards the US have become more negative since Trump’s reelection last November.
